What Are the Top Attractions at Jim Corbett National Park? Complete Safari Guide

Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest national park and one of its finest wildlife sanctuaries — a vast 1,318 sq km reserve in the Shivalik and Lower Himalayan ranges of Uttarakhand. Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park (renamed in 1957 after the legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett), the park was the first to come under Project Tiger in 1973 and today shelters one of India's densest tiger populations.

Just 260 km from Delhi — a 5–6 hour drive — Corbett is the most accessible major tiger reserve from the capital. Yet it never feels rushed or tourist-overrun in the way some other parks do. Here is everything you need to plan a proper Corbett wildlife trip.

Getting to Corbett from Delhi: 260 km via NH9 through Moradabad to Ramnagar (the main base town). EZPZ Taxi offers Delhi to Corbett safari trips with early morning departures — call +91-9871121217 or book at ezpztaxi.com. Departure from Delhi by 4–5 AM gets you to Ramnagar by 10 AM — in time for the afternoon safari.

Understanding Jim Corbett — Zones & Gates

Corbett is divided into 5 safari zones — each with a different character, wildlife density, and access rules:

| Zone | Location | Best For | Open Year-Round? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhikala | Core zone, far inside | Tigers, elephants, best wildlife | No (closed June–mid-Oct) |
| Bijrani | Near Ramnagar | Tigers, leopards, easy access | No (closed June–mid-Oct) |
| Jhirna | Southern boundary | Year-round, good leopard | Yes |
| Durga Devi | Northeast, hilly | Birds, elephants | No (closed June–mid-Oct) |
| Sitabani | Buffer zone | Casual nature walk, birds | Yes (no core zone entry) |

Dhikala is the crown jewel — deep inside the core zone, it has the highest wildlife density. The Forest Rest Houses here allow staying inside the park overnight — an extraordinary experience. But Dhikala is booked out months in advance.

Jhirna is the most accessible zone year-round and has excellent leopard, sloth bear, and elephant sightings.

Safari timings:
- Morning safari: 6:00–9:00 AM (October–February), 5:30–8:30 AM (March–May)
- Afternoon safari: 2:30–5:30 PM (October–February), 3:00–6:00 PM (March–May)

1. Jeep Safari — The Core Experience

All wildlife sightings at Corbett happen during jeep safaris — open 4WD vehicles (Gypsy or Maruti Bolero) that enter the core and buffer zones under mandatory forest department guidance.

Booking jeep safaris:
Online booking at the official Uttarakhand forest website is mandatory:
www.corbettonline.uk.gov.in

- Book at least 4–8 weeks in advance for Dhikala and Bijrani zones
- Jhirna zone allows same-day and short-notice bookings

Safari fees:
- Indians: ₹800–1,200 per person per safari (zone dependent)
- Foreigners: ₹3,000–4,000 per person
- Jeep hire (6 persons max): ₹2,500–3,500 additional

What to spot:
- Royal Bengal Tiger: Corbett has 250+ tigers — sightings are relatively frequent in March–May when water bodies shrink and tigers approach
- Indian Elephant: Over 600 wild elephants in the reserve — frequently seen in Dhikala area
- Leopard: Jhirna zone has excellent leopard sighting records
- Sloth Bear: Seen frequently in Jhirna
- Mugger Crocodile: In the Ramganga River
- Gharial: Critically endangered, seen in Ramganga
- King Cobra, Python: In the buffer zone areas
- Deer and Antelope: Spotted deer (chital), sambar, hog deer, barking deer in large numbers — serve as prey species indicator for tiger presence

Best tiger sighting season: March to mid-June when the deciduous forest loses its leaves (better visibility), water is scarce (animals gather at waterholes), and temperatures drive tigers to waterside locations in daylight.

2. Dhikala — Overnight in the Heart of the Jungle

Only accessible with prior booking and overnight stay in Forest Rest House

Staying overnight at Dhikala — 50 km inside the park — is one of India's greatest wildlife experiences. The Forest Rest House (FRH) at Dhikala has basic accommodation (₹2,000–4,000/night) and allows you to be inside the core zone at dawn and dusk when wildlife activity peaks.

What makes Dhikala overnight special:
- You're woken by the alarm calls of deer — signalling a tiger or leopard nearby
- You can walk on the FRH grounds and the watchtower area at dawn (not in forest)
- Two full safaris per day in the core zone
- Evening from the FRH watchtower — watching elephants come to the Ramganga River at dusk

Booking: FRH Dhikala must be booked through the official portal months in advance. Combined accommodation + safari booking: corbettonline.uk.gov.in

3. Corbett Museum at Kaladhungi

Kaladhungi village, 13 km from Ramnagar | Open: 9 AM – 5 PM, closed Monday | Entry: ₹15

Jim Corbett Museum is the original home of Jim Corbett (1875–1955) — the Kumaon-born British-Indian hunter, naturalist, and author. Corbett shot the man-eating tigers and leopards of Kumaon that killed hundreds of villagers in the early 20th century, then became one of India's first conservationists.

The museum houses Corbett's personal belongings, his famous rifle, photographs, his books, and documents about his hunts and his later conservation work. Reading his masterwork "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" (freely available online) before visiting makes the museum infinitely richer.

The house itself is preserved as it was — small, unpretentious, surrounded by the same mango and guava trees that Corbett planted.

4. Garjia Devi Temple

15 km from Ramnagar on the Dhikala road | Open: 6 AM – 6 PM | Entry: Free

Garjia Devi Temple is a remarkable temple perched on a rocky island in the middle of the Kosi River — the river flowing around the island makes for a dramatic natural setting. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Garjia (a local form of Parvati) and is extremely sacred to the Kumaoni people.

Getting there: The temple is accessible by a brief wade through the river (shoes off) or via a footbridge. The surrounding landscape — forest, river, rocky hills — is beautiful.

Photography: The temple on its rocky island surrounded by the flowing river is one of the most photogenic sites near Corbett.

NOTE: The river can be deep during and after monsoon (July–September) — visit in October–May for safe access.

5. Corbett Waterfall

25 km from Ramnagar | 2 km trek from road | Entry: ₹50

A beautiful 65-foot waterfall in the Corbett buffer zone area, reached via a short 2 km trek through forested terrain. The trek itself passes through excellent bird habitat. The pool at the base of the waterfall is cold and clear.

Birding en route: The forest between Ramnagar and Corbett Waterfall has excellent birds — Himalayan kingfisher, great hornbill, various Himalayan flycatchers, and owl species.

---

6. Bird Watching — Corbett's Underrated Treasure

Corbett is a globally significant birding destination with 650+ recorded species — more than many entire countries. The Ramganga River floodplain areas (accessible from Dhikala) and the Durga Devi zone are particularly rich.

Star species:
- Pallas's Fish Eagle and Grey-headed Fish Eagle at the Ramganga
- Great Hornbill in the forest interior
- Himalayan Flameback Woodpecker
- Crested Serpent Eagle
- Various owlets and nightjars (heard at dusk inside the park)
- Indian Skimmer on the Ramganga (winter visitor)
- Painted Stork, Woolly-necked Stork

Birding guide: Hire a local bird guide from Ramnagar town (₹800–1,500/day) — they know the exact sites for target species.

Best Time to Visit Corbett

| Period | Conditions | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| October–November | Post-monsoon lushness, all zones open | Excellent — birds, greenery, good temps |
| December–February | Cool (5–20°C), dry | Good visibility, tigers near water |
| March–mid June | Hot but best tiger sightings | Peak tiger season — book months ahead |
| Mid-June to mid-Oct | Monsoon — most zones closed | Only Jhirna zone open, birds excellent |
