What Are the Best Places to Visit in Dehradun? Complete Travel Guide

Dehradun β€” the capital of Uttarakhand β€” sits in a broad valley between the Himalayas and the Shivalik Hills at 640m altitude. It is often overlooked in favour of the hill stations nearby, but Dehradun has a character all its own: a laid-back, green, educated city with a pleasant climate, remarkable colonial heritage, and superb access to Mussoorie (22 km), Rishikesh (43 km), and Haridwar (54 km). With the new Delhi-Dehradun Expressway cutting travel time to just 2.5–3 hours, Dehradun has become one of North India's most accessible weekend destinations.

Getting to Dehradun from Delhi: 300 km via the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. EZPZ Taxi offers Delhi to Dehradun cabs starting at approximately β‚Ή3,200 for a sedan β€” call +91-9871121217 or book at ezpztaxi.com.

1. Robber's Cave (Guchhupani)

8 km from Dehradun city | Open: 8 AM – 5 PM | Entry: β‚Ή50 Indians, β‚Ή100 foreigners

Robber's Cave is Dehradun's most unique and popular attraction β€” a natural river gorge where you walk through a narrow cave with water flowing from ankle to knee depth, surrounded by vertical rock walls. The cave is about 600 metres long with a seasonal waterfall at the end.

The name comes from legend β€” this cave was supposedly used by dacoits (robbers) as a hideout in colonial times. Whether true or not, the atmosphere is genuinely dramatic: narrow passages, rushing cold water underfoot, towering rock walls above.

Tips: Wear waterproof sandals or be prepared to remove shoes β€” the rocky floor is uneven. The water is ice-cold even in summer (a relief on hot days). Go in the morning to avoid peak crowds.

What makes it special: Unlike most Dehradun attractions which are historic or scenic, Robber's Cave is a physical, interactive experience β€” you wade through the cave. Children and adults both love it.

2. Sahastradhara (Thousand-Fold Spring)

14 km from Dehradun | Open: Always | Entry: Free | Ropeway: β‚Ή150 return

Sahastradhara (meaning "Thousand-Fold Spring") is a complex of limestone caves and natural sulphur springs in the Shivalik foothills. The water here has high sulphur content and is believed to have therapeutic properties for skin conditions.

What to see and do:
- Sulphur springs: Bathe in the natural pools β€” the water is cool and slightly milky. Many people with skin conditions make special pilgrimages here.
- Waterfall: A beautiful tiered waterfall is the centrepiece of the complex, best in monsoon and post-monsoon (September–October).
- Ropeway: A cable car goes up the hillside for panoramic views of the Doon Valley β€” excellent on clear days when the Himalayan ranges are visible.
- Cave walk: Several small limestone caves are accessible via pathways.

Eating: Numerous food stalls and restaurants near the entrance serve local Garhwali food and snacks.

3. Forest Research Institute (FRI)

4 km from city centre | Open: 9 AM – 5 PM, closed Sunday | Entry: β‚Ή30

The Forest Research Institute is one of Dehradun's greatest treasures and one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in India. Built in 1929 in the Indo-Gothic (or "Colonial-Mughal") style, the building is a magnificent red-brick palace covering 450 acres.

Why visit:
- The building itself is extraordinary β€” a UNESCO-listed heritage structure with grand colonnaded corridors, arched verandahs, and a massive central courtyard. Walking its corridors feels like stepping back into 1920s British India.
- Six museums inside: Silviculture Museum (forest science), Social Forestry Museum, Timber Museum (wood samples from every Indian tree species), Non-Wood Forest Products Museum, Pathology Museum, and Entomology Museum.
- The campus grounds: 450 acres of gardens, arboretum, and experimental forest β€” a beautiful walk.

Best for: Architecture enthusiasts, nature lovers, photographers, families.

4. Tapkeshwar Temple

5 km from Dehradun | Open: 5 AM – 7 PM | Entry: Free

Tapkeshwar Mahadev is a beautiful natural Shiva temple set inside a cave on the banks of the Tons River. Water drips continuously from the cave roof onto the Shivalinga β€” which is how the temple gets its name (tapak = to drip). The Shivalinga here is naturally formed (swayambhu).

The temple complex is set in a lush green riverine landscape β€” the sound of the river, the cave atmosphere, and the dripping water make for a uniquely atmospheric spiritual experience.

Shivratri at Tapkeshwar: The biggest festival here β€” hundreds of thousands of devotees come during Mahashivratri (February/March). A large fair is held outside.

Combined with: Sahastradhara (8 km away) makes a good half-day circuit.

5. Mindrolling Monastery

6 km from Dehradun | Open: 9 AM – 6 PM | Entry: Free

Mindrolling Monastery is one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist centres outside Tibet β€” a stunning complex built by Tibetan refugees who settled in Dehradun after 1959. The main Great Stupa of Enlightenment (45m tall) is decorated with intricate Tibetan Buddhist artwork and houses a meditation hall, prayer wheels, and a museum.

The grounds are beautifully maintained with Japanese-style gardens, prayer flags, and a profound sense of peace. Even for non-Buddhists, the architecture and art are extraordinary.

What to see:
- The great stupa β€” walk around it clockwise spinning the prayer wheels
- The main temple with its magnificent murals and Buddha statues
- The smaller stupas and garden walks
- The monastery museum (Buddhist artifacts and thangka paintings)

Best time: Early morning when monks are doing prayers β€” the sound of chanting is magnificent.
